Where in the world is .INFO?
Three years ago, the top five countries in which .INFO domains were registered – in order of popularity – were the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan and Canada.
Today, North America still contains the most .INFO owners; 53 percent of all .INFO domain names are registered in the USA and Canada. That number -- 53 percent -- represents a five percent drop in the past three years. Europe, too, has lost a small share of three percentage points; Europe combined has 24 percent of the total .INFO share.
The shift has been to the Asia-Pacific region, which grew from 12 percent of registrations in 2010 to 21 percent today. Japan is now the third-biggest market of .INFO names. The differences in regions is highlighted in the graphic, “Geographic Distribution of .INFO Domain Names.”
Although overall percentages have changed, top countries for .INFO registrations remained consistent: the United States, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and Canada continue to represent the “top five.”
Internationalized Domain Names
.INFO is available in 10 Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) scripts. In the past year, IDN registrations continued to generate interest with 0.4% of .INFO domains registered as IDNs. The bulk — 83 percent — are in German script. You can see the distribution of the other IDN scripts in the graphic, “.INFO IDN Registrations by Script (non-German).” And, as you might expect, the vast majority — 98 percent — of those IDNs were registered outside of the USA.
Interest in .INFO continues to grow
As a side note to this information, the number of registrars accredited to sell the .INFO domain continues to grow. The count of accredited .INFO registrars has increased from 398 registrars in 2010 to 427 at the end of 2012. This increase shows that global interest in the .INFO domain continues to grow steadily.
